THE THRILLER IN POTOMAC

by Derek Toney

The most poignant moment of Saturday
night’s boys’ basketball game between Digital Harbor High and Lake
Clifton didn’t happen on the court.

“Baltimore missed a heck of
a ballgame,” said the public address announcer sitting behind the
scorers’ table in the gym at Winston Churchill in Montgomery County
before the post-game ceremonies for the Chick-fil-A Holiday Classic.

For
the handful of spectators who traveled to the outskirts of the nation’s
capital, they weren’t disappointed. The No. 4 Lakers outlasted
third-ranked Digital Harbor, 60-58, in overtime for the tournament
championship.

Daniel Horton’s layup with about five seconds
remaining in the extra session was the eventual difference for Lake
Clifton (7-1). Antoine Allen was able to get a piece of Digital
Harbor’s Justin Jackson’s three-point attempt, ending the best contest
so far this season involving teams from the Baltimore City league.

Antoine
Allen, a senior guard, scored 22 points to lead Lake Clifton, and
backcourt mate Derrious Gilmore added 17. Justin Jackson, a sophomore
guard, tied for game-high honors with 22 for the Rams (4-2), and
juniors Kevin Davis and George Jackson contributed 12.

Playing
with four fouls, Gilmore helped rallied the Lakers from a nine-point
deficit in the fourth quarter, then set up Horton for the game winner.
The senior picked up all four infractions in the opening half, and was
on the bench for the entire third quarter.

“I tried to stay
mentally and physically tough, but it got kind of hard,”  said Gilmore,
who had seven assists. “My teammates cheered me on and kept me focused,
and told me I had to carry us when I got back in. I did a good job of
keeping my team involved and getting through this.”

Gilmore
brought the Lakers even in regulation with two free throws with 13.3
seconds remaining. He had a basket in overtime, but three key assists
including a pair of drives-and-dish offs to Horton (six points). Lake
Clifton coach Herman Harried said Gilmore’s maturity was the difference.

“A
year ago, he [Gilmore] would’ve had put head his down and I would have
keep trying to get him to keep his head up,” said Lake Clifton coach
Herman Harried, who got a solid performance from reserve Jaquan Jones
in Gilmore’s absence. “I looked over my shoulder one time, and he was
cheering and clapping. When he was called back on, he said he would not
foul out this game.”

After the squads an exchanged of free
throws to start overtime, Gilmore went nearly the entire length of the
court for a layup. The Rams answered with two free throws from Jermaine
Edwards, then Gilmore found Jason Sharp for a three-pointer giving Lake
Clifton a 53-50 lead with two minutes left.

Digital Harbor
responded again with a three-pointer from Justin Jackson before Horton
scored off a pass from Gilmore. A three-point play by Allen (five
points in overtime) gave the Lakers a 58-55 advantage with 57.2 seconds
left, but Davis came right back for the Rams with a three-pointer with
46 seconds remaining.

Gilmore missed on a drive, but Lake
Clifton was able to retain possession. Gilmore drove down the lane and
passed off his left to Horton, who went up for the easy basket off the
glass. Digital Harbor got a timeout with 1.2 seconds remaining, but was
unable to pull off another victory against a team ranked in the Digital
Top 20.

“Late in regulation, we got complacent with the ball and
didn’t make the right decisions,” said Rams coach Johnny Grimes. “I’m
happy for them and I’m proud of them because it ended like it suppose
to end.”

The south Baltimore school appeared headed to a fourth
straight decision over a Top 10 squad, opening the final quarter with a
13-4 run for a 44-35 advantage with 3:07 left in regulation with the
Jackson brothers creating opportunities off of drives to the basket.
The Rams, however, didn’t score again until 22 seconds remaining.

Allen
scored six straight followed by a free throw and basket by Gilmore,
tying the game at 44. Justin Jackson hit a pull-up from the free throw
line, giving Digital Harbor the lead back. After Gilmore’s free throws
tied the game at 46, Digital Harbor tried to get a final shot off but
George Jackson was called for a charge and fouled out.

Like a
round of a championship boxing match, the three-minute overtime was a
battle royale as the first seven possessions resulted in points. On the
eighth, Justin Jackson missed a shot, but was able to steal the ball
back, leading to a tip in by Jermaine Edwards (10 points), tying the
game at 55.

The Rams and Lakers don’t play during the
regular season, but could meet in the City championship game if they
both win their respective divisions. They might be hard pressed to
match Saturday.

“Everybody probably wanted to see this,” said
Gilmore standing in the near empty gym in Potomac, nearly 50 miles from
Baltimore. “This is one of the best games you’ll get this year.”

SHOWDOWN IN MOCO

by Derek Toney

Digital Harbor’s boys’ basketball team fell behind 16 points in the opening half, but the No. 3 Rams stormed back for a 56-53 decision over host Winston Churchill in the opening round of Chick-fil-A Holiday Tournament in Montgomery County Friday evening.

In an all-Baltimore City finale, Digital Harbor will hook up with No. 4 Lake Clifton Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Lakers defeated Potomac from Prince George’s County in the other opening round match Friday.

Sophomore guard Justin Jackson scored a game-high 25 points for Digital Harbor (5-1), which outscored Churchill, 33-24, in the second half. Rams coach Johnny Grimes was impressed with the final outcome.

“We just didn’t play well in the first half, a lot of turnovers. The layoff definitely hurt us,” said Grimes. “They showed a lot of character.”

Grimes said junior forward/center Jermaine Edwards (eight points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots) was key down the stretch despite being sick. Edwards didn’t play until two minutes before halftime.

Rams junior guard George Jackson had eight points and 10 assists. Churchill junior Chase Hicks had 20 points.

Lake Clifton (6-1) punched its ticket to the finals with its 77-54 win over Potomac. Antoine Allen scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds, and Darius Gilmore contributed 16.

The only loss the Lakers and Digital Harbor own came against Friendship Academy from the District. The Rams will be looking for their fourth straight victory against a team ranked in the Digital Top 10.

THE OTHER J

by Derek Toney

Like Douglass and Mervo, Walbrook High found out Thursday how good the Digital Harbor backcourt of George and Justin Jackson is. Jermaine Edwards isn’t bad either.

While the Jacksons have headlined the Rams’ start, Edwards has quietly been the glue. His 16 points and eight rebounds aided No. 16 Digital Harbor to a 66-54 victory over the fourth-ranked Warriors in a Baltimore City boys’ basketball non-divisional contest.

Sophomore Justin Jackson led the Rams (4-0) with a game-high 28 points. Roscoe Smith scored 16 points and junior Dashion Knight contributed 15 for Walbrook (4-3), which lost for the second consecutive season to the south Baltimore school.

Digital Harbor viewed last season’s victory as a turning point. The latest triumph completed a five-day period in which the Rams defeated Top 10 teams in Douglass (then No. 8 Saturday), No. 5 Mervo Tuesday and the Warriors.

“We just want to play basketball,” said Rams coach Johnny Grimes. “We come out with that sense of urgency and we don’t want to lose.”

“The wins are good, but we still have a lot of hard work to do,”  said Edwards. “We’re not done trying proving our point in the city. Until we get to states, then we can look back on our season.”

Edwards, a six foot, four inch sophomore forward did a solid defensively Thursday on Smith, a 6-7 sophomore who managed just two field goals. Grimes said Edwards doesn’t mind doing the dirty work.

“If he’s not scoring, he’s going to defend,” said Grimes. “He’s going to block shots, dive on the floor, he just wants to win. He plays off intensity.”

Trailing early, Digital Harbor amped its defensive pressure, closing the first half with a 22-8 run to take a 28-23 halftime lead with Justin Jackson scoring the final 10 points. Edwards’ three-point play set up by an offensive rebound by George Jackson (seven points) gave the Rams a 39-27 advantage midway in the third quarter.

Smith (12-of-12 free throws) brought the Warriors within 50-47 on a pair of free throws with two minutes, 47 seconds remaining in regulation, but a Justin Jackson three-pointer from about a foot behind the top of the key pushed the lead to 55-48. Edwards followed with offensive rebound and basket, and Walbrook got no closer than seven points.

“Justin and George are probably the toughest backcourt tandem in the state of Maryland. They make the ball game easier for the rest of the players on their team,” said Walbrook coach Kelvin Bridgers. “Edwards is a tremendously athletic kid and his greatest asset is he doesn’t try to do too much out of his character.”

“We got a lot of good players starting and coming off the bench for us,” said Edwards, whose team received 13 points from Gary Brannon. “When teams are thinking about George and Justin, it takes the weight off us. We just play our roles, I’m not really concern that they [opponents] don’t know me.”

Digital Harbor heads to the Chick-fil-a Touranment at Winston Churchill in Montgomery County next week where they could meet up with No. 8 Lake Clifton. The Rams say they’re taking their early season success in stride.

“What a week,” said Grimes. “We’re going to take it one game at a time and continue working hard. This is a nice Christmas present.”
