DIGITAL HARBOR BOUNCE BACK IN OT

George Jackson scored six of his 20 points in overtime as No. 4 Digital Harbor defeated defending Class 1A state champ New Town, 55-53, in the opening game of the 12th annual Basketball Academy at Morgan State University Friday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Justin Jackson added 15 points for the Rams, who bounced back from a loss to Parkville Thursday at Hill Field House. Senior forward Kendrick Brown led New Town with 13 points and junior guard Chris Hutchinson had 12.

Trailing 49-48 in overtime, Gary Brannon gave Digital Harbor the lead for good with a three-pointer with 2:25 remaining, and George Jackson followed with five free throws. After a three-pointer by Willie Kee got New Town to within 54-51 with 10 seconds remaining, George Jackson added one more free throw for a four-point advantage.

“Everyody was telling us to play harder tomorrow [Friday] because it was a tough loss,” said Justin Jackson. “We didn’t execute our plays, but in the second half against New Town, we executed and played real hard and came out with the win.”

New Town led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but the Rams rallied to take the lead. The Titans forced overtime as Stuart Clarke (nine points) scored on a layup after Brown blocked a layup attempt by Kevin Davis.

The momentum carried into overtime as Hutchinson opened the scoring with a layup, but New Town was unable to beat a team ranked in the Digital Top 10. The Owings Mills school led 25-12 at halftime before Digital Harbor shrink the gap to 35-34 as the Jackson brothers combined for 18 points in third quarter.

“I told the guys they [the Jacksons] were going to exerted themselves in the third quarter which they did,” said New Town coach Michael Smith, whose team will match up with No. 2 Lake Clifton Saturday at Hill Field House. “We didn’t play hard enough, we didn’t play aggressively in the second half.”

DIGITAL HARBOR UPSET BY PARKVILLE

by Derek Toney

Parkville High boys’ basketball coach Rod
Norris said his team came into Thursday’s matchup with Digital Harbor
at Morgan State University limping. The Knights left with a strut in
their walk.

The Baltimore County school surprised the
fourth-ranked Rams, 51-49, at the 12th annual Basketball Academy.
Junior guard Tom Cummings scored 17 points to lead Parkville (6-4).
Junior forward Jermaine Edwards led all scorers with 18 points for
Digital Harbor (7-3), and junior guard George Jackson added 11.

Cummings.a
transfer from Poly, hit one of two free throws with 3.2 seconds
remaining for a 51-49 lead, missing the second. Digital Harbor got the
rebound, but Gabe Bell intercepted the outlet pass as the Knights
snapped a four-game losing streak.

“We’ve been struggling
lately,” said Norris, whose team previous win was Dec. . “We kept the
game tight, got a little lead and we were able to finish.”

After
Digital Harbor got within 44-43 on a follow up by Edwards with 1:23
remaining in regulation, Cummings hit a free throw, then came up with a
steal and a layup to extend Parkville’s advantage to 47-43 with 45
seconds left. A free throw by Edwards brought the Rams to within 47-44,
before Bell converted two with 19 seconds remaining.

Justin
Jackson hit a three-pointer, bringing Digital Harbor back to within two
with 13.5 seconds left, then Durand Johnson hit one of two free throws
for a 50-47 lead. Norris said the Knights were to able to adjust to
playing on the huge and open hardwood of Morgan’s Hill Field House.

“We
wanted to make sure we contained the dribble penetration,” said Norris,
whose team lost to No. 5 Randallstown Wednesday evening. “Make the
extra pass and work together.”

Parkville went 20-4 last season,
losing to Blake from Montgomery County in the Class 4A North Region
semifinals. The Knights graduated their entire starting lineup with
only Gabe Dell and Jordan Jackson returning letterwinners.

“Chemistry
isn’t all there yet, but we’re working on it,” said Dell, a 5-foot-9
point guard. “We’re bouncing back. This is a good win against a good
team, a top 10 team.”

George Jackson had 11 points for Digital
Harbor, eight coming into the final quarter. The Rams won’t have time
to dwell on the loss, opening Friday’s slate with a matchup against
defending Class 1A state champ New Town.

The Knights return to Morgan State for a date with No. 11 Mervo Saturday. They’ll be in a much different frame of mind.

“We
needed this win to build our confidence back up because we shouldn’t
had loss the games we lost,” said Dell. “We were motivated.”

OLD FRIENDS REUNITE ON DAY TWO AT THE ACADEMY

12th annual Basketball Academy
When: Friday thru Saturday
Where: Hill Field House, Morgan State University
Tickets: $10 at door (children under five years old free)

New Town vs. No. 4 Digital Harbor

When: 2 p.m.
Outlook: The Titans hope the third time’s the charm. The Owings Mills school have lost to Top 10 teams in Randallstown and St. Frances Academy, but does have a decisive victory over No. 20 Dunbar (at Michael J. Gilbert Foundation Tournament in D.C. during holiday). Junior point guard Stuart Clark is the catylst along with Kendrick Brown, but James Black have proven to be solid contributors. Though Justin and George Jackson have garnered most of the headlines for Digital Harbor, Jermaine Edwards, Gary Brannon and Kevin Davis have been critical to the Rams’ success.

Riverdale Baptist girls vs. No. 1 St. Frances

When: 3:30 p.m.
Outlook: With the sting of an embarassing home loss to No. 2 Seton Keough still fresh, St. Frances will try to get some payback against Riverdale Baptist. The Crusaders, ranked No. 6 in the Washington area, defeated the Panthers, 53-41, in the opening round of the IAABO Invitational Tournament at Prince George’s Community College as Kandice Green went down in the final quarter with the game tight. Green, who returned to action Monday, spearhead the front line with junior Sophy Ngobeni and sophomore Briana Hutchen. St. Frances will have to slow down sophomore forward Ataira Franklin, who scored 24 points in the first meeting.

Dunbar (D.C.) vs. No. 11 Mervo

When: 5 p.m.
Outlook: Dunbar hopes to have a better showing than its previous visit to Charm City. At the season’s opening Baltimore-D.C. Challenge in December, the Crimson Tide were dominated by Lake Clifton, 83-50, but are 8-2 since. Dunbar is young, with only two seniors inclduing starting forward Leonard Cole. The Mustangs, who defeated Dunbar’s league rival, Ballou by 25 points at the Baltimore-D.C. Challenge, are led by senior forward Byron Westmoreland.

No. 6 Douglass vs. No. 5 Randallstown

When: 6:30 p.m.
Outlook: Like the classic Celtics-Lakers rivalry of the early 1980s, this is arguably the Baltimore high school version. Randallstown defeated Douglass, 86-70, in the Class 2A North Region finals enroute to a third straight state championship. The Rams from Baltimore County don’t have the star-power in previous seasons, but are still a force with a deep and athletic squad led by junior forward/center Alex Jackson and senior point guard Tione Womack. Senior guard Omar Strong establishes the pace for Douglass, which will be playing its second straight Final Four opponent in as many as days, following Largo from Prince George’s County.

Riverdale Baptist vs. No. 2 Lake Clifton

When: 8 p.m.
Outlook: The Crusaders from Prince George’s County will get another opportunity against one of Baltimore City’s best. The Lakers will depend on their talented backcourt of Derrious Gilmore, Antoine Allen and Jason Sharp. Lake Clifton should have a good idea how to attack Riverdale Baptist, which plays Thursday evening against No. 20 Dunbar. Brian Wilson and Thomas Robinson lead the Upper Marlboro private power.

No. 3 St. Frances vs. No. 14 Walbrook

When: 9:30 p.m.
Outlook: These teams scrimmaged each other at North County High in Anne Arundel County back in late November, but this matchup will count. The Warriors have a young, but talented squad with 6-foot-7 sophomore Roscoe Smith, who has scholarship offers from the University of Maryland and Georgetown, sophomore Jerrod Briscoe and juniors Donte Stuckey and Dashion Knight. Though senior Sean Mosley sets the pace for St. Frances, its hopes lie with freshman point guard Ronald Williams and sophomores Wayne Sparrow, Dante Holmes and Gregory Lewis.

BASKETBALL ACADEMY READY TO TAKE FLIGHT FOR 2008

by Derek Toney

Morgan State University’s Hill Field House will be the center of the local basketball universe as the 12th annual Basketball Academy takes place Thursday thru Saturday. The three-day mixer will bring together some of the best girls’ and boys’ teams from Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Prince George’s County and the District.

Fourteen teams ranked in the Digital Top 20 (boys and girls) will be on display. Tickets are $10 each day (children under five years old are admitted free), and can be purchased at the Hill Field House ticket office.

Thursday’s games

No. 13 Dulaney girls vs. No. 4 Western
When:
2 p.m.
Outlook: It’s a matchup of champions as reigning Baltimore City champ Western faces off with Dulaney, Baltimore County’s best last season. Both teams are again the best in the respective locales so far this season. The Doves are spearheaded by junior guard Akeema Richards, the top player in the City league. The Lions have had little problem in league play behind guard/forward Danielle Parker, but haven’t face a team the caliber of Western or St. Frances, which they will get Saturday.

No. 17 Catonsville girls vs. No. 5 City College
When:
3:30 p.m.
Outlook: After crossing paths last postseason, the Comets and Knights meet again. Catonsville possess one of the area’s best players in senior point guard Shamika Williams, and senior guard Jessica Nonn is a four-year varsity starter. LaShay Taft and Carissa Williams lead the unbeaten Knights, who defeated Catonsville, 67-58, in the Class 3A North Region semifinals last season.

Parkville vs. No. 4 Digital Harbor
When:
5 p.m.
Outlook: Arguably the biggest story in the City league so far, Digital Harbor gets an opportunity to show itself on the huge Hill Field House court. The brother backcourt duo of George and Justin Jackson have been the spark behind the Rams’ surge. Parkville graduated its entire starting lineup from a 20-4 regional, but coach Rod Norris has the Knights back in the mix in the Baltimore County 3A/4A league because of a Jackson, senior forward Jordan.

Largo vs. No. 6 Douglass
When
: 6:30 p.m.
Outlook: The Ducks get one of the state’s top teams in defending Prince George’s County champ Largo. The Lions, winners of 32 of their last 33 decisions, bring a high-powered fast-paced assault with four double-digits scorers in Klevin Pollard (25.2 points a game), 6-foot-10 center Maurice Sutton (21.9), Aaron Martin (18) and Darren Clark (17.1). Douglass has a strong transition attack with senior guards Omar Strong, Justin Berry and Brandon Simms. Expect a lot of points.

No. 12 City College vs. No. 3 St. Frances Academy
When:
8 p.m.
Outlook: Though a matchup between a city public and Baltimore Catholic League team, there’s some familiarity. City coach Mike Daniel regularly battled St. Frances when he guided Towson Catholic for nearly two decades. The game will feature the area’s top senior in University of Maryland-bound Sean Mosley from St. Frances against arguably the best sophomore, Knights’ 6-foot-7 swingman C.J. Fair.

Riverdale Baptist  vs. No. 20 Dunbar
When:
9:30 p.m.
Outlook: Another battle between Baltimore City and Prince George’s County caps the opening night. The Poets have been up-and-down, but junior forward Sean Farr has been arguably their most consistent performer.  Riverdale Baptist (14-2), ranked 17th in the Washington metro area, has guard Brian Wilson and 6-7 forward Thomas Robinson. The Upper Marlboro school isn’t a stranger to Baltimore, having beaten Poly Tuesday.

The 5-foot-9, 175-pounder ran for a school-record 2,553 yards and a school-record 32 touchdowns, averaging 12.89 yards per carry on 198 attempts.

Austin scored 39 touchdowns on the year overall, raising his career touchdown total to a state record 92, surpassing, by five, the old mark of 87 prevously held by Old Mill’s Ryan Callahan.

An athlete who has clocked a 4.4-second 40-yard dash, Austin led the Poets to their second consecutive Class 1A state title, and their program’s fifth overall, when added to the back-to-back crowns won in 1994, and ’95 in the Class 2A and Class 3A, and to that earned in Class 1A in 2004.

For the Poets, who were a school-record 14-0 this year, Austin also caught touchdowns on three of his 17 receptions totaling 335 yards, and returned both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns.

Defensively, Austin had 33 solo tackles and 52 overall as well as three forced fumbles, returning one of his four interceptions for a school-record 101-yard touchdown,  and also one of his two fumble recoveries for another score.

Austin, who also completed 3-of-4 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, has 5,287 career rushing yards to bring him within 633 yards of tying the state’s all-time carreer rushing yardage total of 5,920 presently held by Auburn University’s Ben Tate, who played at both Stephen Decatur and Snow Hill from 2003 to 2005.

Austin, whose 12 two-point conversions raised his scoring totals to 258 points, rushed for a career-high 344 yards in a 49-24 victory over last year’s Class 2A state champion Edmondson.

Austin always was quick to credit the play of his offensive line, comprised of first-team All-City picks Antonio Brown, Malcolm Speller and Anthony Watters, and also Matthew Odezugo and Devin Clark.

And when Austin went down with a rib injury early in the Poets’ state semifinal rout of South Carroll of Carroll County, Austin credited his teammates, junior quarterback Jonathan Perry and junior receiver Sean Farr for their offensive dominance.

Austin wore a flack jacket as protection for the injury during the Poets’ title-winning, 58-34 victory over previously unbeaten Allegany of Cumberland.

In the state title game, Austin scored three of Dunbar’s first four touchdowns on runs of 9, 32 and 59 yards to help his team to build a 40-12 halfime lead.

Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, Virginia and Wake Forest have offered full scholarships to Austin, and Florida, Florida State, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio State and Texas are highly interested in Austin’s skills.

DigitalSports Baltimore City Defensive Player of The Year
Keon Redhead, Dunbar

Click here for interview with Keon Redhead following Dunbar’s Class 1A North Regional title win over Surrattsville

The 5-foot-9, 220-pound senior has been a four-year starter for the Poets, who, during that time were Class 1A state titlists in 2004, 2006 and this year — the latter at a school-record 14-0.

Redhead totaled a team-high 158 tackles, 90 of which were unassisted. Redhead made 13 tackles for lost yardage and had four each in fumble recoveries, forced fumbles and sacks.

This season, Redhead made a career-high 13 tackles for lost yardage, nearly half of the total of 28 he accumulated over his four years in the starting role.

Over the course of his career, Redhead totaled 23 sacks, with his career-high being a a sophomore with eight.

Redhead recovered a career-high five fumbles as a junior, and has 15 over the course of his four years.

Redhead also caused a career-high five fumbles as a junior, finishing with 13 of those for his career.

Redhead bench presses 330 pounds, can squat 550 and has clocked a 4.7-second 40-yard dash.

Behind Redhead, the Poets allowed an average of just over 11 points per game overall, and, just over eight points in Baltimore City League A Conference play.

Redhead, who totaled 409 tackles (an average of more than 102 perseason), has been offered scholarships to Bowie, Virginia State, Albright and Johnson C. Smith.

Lawrence Smith, Dunbar

Click here for Smith and the Poets following their Class 1A South Regional title win over Surrattsville

Click here for Smith’s interview following Dunbar’s Class 1A South Regional victory over Surrattsville

A former assistant, Smith was thrust into the role of head coach when
Ben Eaton died suddenly in late August. The entire season, however,
Smith kept the goals, hopes and methods of Eaton at the forefront of
the players and the other coaches.

Smith, offensive coordinator Travis Blackston and defensive coordinator
Anderson Powell kept the Poets’ performing at an optimum level, guiding
Dunbar to a school-record 14-0 mark that ended with their second
consecutive Class 1A state title victory, 58-34, over Allegany of
Cumberland.

The win was Dunbar’s school-record 24th straight, earning the program’s
fifth overall state title, when added to the back-to-back crowns earned
in 1994 and ’95 in Class 2A and Class 3A, and that in Class 1A that was
won in 2004.

Along the way, the Poets’ defeated Baltimore City League B Division
champ, Digital Harbor, and also routed Class 2A North regional
semifinalist City and Class 2A North regional semifinalist Poly as well
as last year’s Class 2A state champion, Edmondson, on the way to
earning the Baltimore City League’s A Conferene crown.

In winning the Class 1A South Region title, Dunbar routed Prince
George’s County teams Forestville and Surrattsville, overcoming
programs which boasted University of Maryland-bound players Kevin
Dorsey and Davin Meggett.

Dunbar scored a state record 196 points in four playoff games, erasing
the old mark (141) held by state champion Urbana in 1999.

The Poets’ 58 points in the state championship game tied the record
established by Valley High in 1977, when it routed Snow Hill, 58-16,
for a state title.

Junior running back Tavon Austin raised his career touchdown totals to a state record, 92, surpassing the old record by five.

Junior quarterback  Jonathan Perry, a transfer from 1-9 Samuel Banks,
threw for 2,290 yards and 23 touchdowns. Junior receiver Sean Farr
caught 49 passes for 1,408 yards and 18 touchdowns.

Smith, named interim coach throughout the season, has been installed as the head coach for next year’s Poets.

The Poets should return Austin, Perry, Farr, Tevin Brown, Horace
Miller, Antonio Brown, Davon Muse, Michael McNeil and Gary Oneukwusi
for their senior seasons, and Devin Clark for his junior year.
